Who does not love a headband? It adds that little extra something to an otherwise plain outfit - and they are back in fashion! It is for this reason that I decided to design this beautiful crochet summer headband. Fortunately, this project does not require a huge amount of yarn (well, some might say unfortunately because this does not give you an excuse to buy a nice new supply of wool), but these are also super quick and easy to whip up.
In terms of wool, I love to use a lightweight, double knit yarn - you can see my free pattern for a beginners springtime bandana which uses the same yarn. A lighter weight yarn stops the headband from being too heavy and stiff. It also means that it is nice and cool in the summer heat. You could also use a cotton yarn which is super light and breathable for those wonderful hot days.
Materials:
4mm crochet hook
a light weight, double knit yarn.
darning needle
scissors
tape measure (optional).
Stitch Abbreviations:
dc: double crochet
htr: half treble crochet
tr: treble crochet
sl st: slip stitch
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in UK terms.
The chain 1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch.
Method:
Begin by measuring the circumference of you head. If, however, you are making this as a gift, the standard head sizes are as follows:
Toddler, 1-3 years | 18-20 inches |
Child, 3-10 years | 20-22 inches |
Teen/Small Adult | 20.5-22 inches |
Medium Adult | 21-23.5 inches |
Large Adult | 22-24.5 inches |
Chain the required length. NOTE: make sure this is a odd number of chains. I have chained 87.
Now, chain an extra 51 (these extra chains are for the ties).
Row 1:
Starting in the second chain from your hook, make 1 dc.
Then, make 1 htr in the next 24 chains.
*Make 1 tr in the next stitch. Chain 1. Skip the next stitch.*
Repeat the above step along until you have 25 chains remaining (you will finish with 1 tr).
In the next 24 chains, make 1 htr.
In the last stitch, make 1 dc.
Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2:
In the 1st stitch, make 1 dc
In the next 24 stitches, make 1 htr.
Make 1 tr in the next stitch (the tr from the previous row). Chain 1. Skip over the chain 1 space.
Continue along, making 1 tr and a chain 1 until you have 25 stitches remaining.
Make 1 htr in the next 24 stitches.
Make 1 dc in the last stitch.
Chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 3:
Make 1 dc in the first stitch.
In the next 24 stitches, make 1 htr.
Make 1 tr in the next stitch (the tr from the previous row). Chain 1. Skip over the chain 1 space.
Continue along, making 1 tr and a chain 1 space until you have 25 stitches remaining.
Make 1 htr in the next 24 stitches.
Make 1 dc in the last stitch.
Fasten off, cut your yarn, and sew in your ends.
Of course, you can add as many rows as you would like - it is completely up to you!
And there you are! You now have your own crochet summer headband!
