These three projects are great if you are new to sewing. They use a minimal amount of fabric, no fancy techniques, and are very quick to make. This post will go through each process step-by-step in the easiest fashion to help you get to grips with sewing.
There is also a video at the bottom of the page if you would like extra help!
A Tissue Holder
This little tissue holder makes a brilliant present, uses up scrap fabric, and is a really handy holder for something everyone will use!
What You Will Need:
2 pieces of fabric 7.5inches by 5.5inches (I like to use two contrasting materials)
Sewing equipment
Something to poke corners out with (e.g. a knitting needle)
An iron
These next items are optional for decoration:
5.5inches of narrow lace edging or Ric Rac
A key chain ring and 2inches of narrow ribbon
Method:
Place both pieces of fabric right sides together and sew along the two shortest edges.
Turn right sides out and iron flat.
If you are adding a key ring, loop the ribbon through it and pin it to the middle edge of the longest side of the fabric.
If you are adding a lace edging or Ric Rac, Pin it along the top shortest edge, on the outside fabric, and sew across it.
Fold the top shortest edge (the one with Ric Rac or lace) 3/4 down the rectangle.
Fold the remaining side over it and pin. Sew the down the two shortest edges.
Turn right sides out, iron flat, and fill with tissues.
If you would like, instead of adding lace or Ric Rac, you could add motifs or fabric flowers on to your tissue holder, like the one made for this baby's headband.
Hair Scrunchies
Scrunchies are, I think, the easiest thing you could ever make! They use minimal fabric, a little elastic, barely any time, and only a few steps. Also, the great things about scrunchies, is that you can make dozens at a time and everyone will use them.
I have a separate blog post for this great project, in which it shows you how to make them step-by-step:
A Pin Cushion
A pin cushion is something every person who sews will need! One always has a mountain of pins, so, why not sew a pin cushion for them?
You Will Need:
2 circles of fabric 4inches in diameter
A button, approx. 3/4inch in diameter
A scrap of felt, approx. the same size as your button
Embroidery thread and needle
Sewing equipment
Toy stuffing
Glue gun/fabric glue
Method:
Place your two circles right sides together, sew around the edge, leaving approx. a 1inch gap.
Turn right sides out and stuff until firm.
Sew the hole closed, the easiest way of doing this is by using a ladder stitch.
Take your embroidery thread and push the needle through the middle of the cushion. Bring the thread around the outside of the cushion and back through the middle.
Continue this process until you have as many loops as you desire.
Sew a button on the top, in the middle.
Glue the felt circle on the bottom to cover any knots from the embroidery thread.
You are now ready to tackle any sewing project, with the aid of your pin cushion!
