This easy headband has the effect of looking like a turban but is, in fact, a simple elasticated headband! It works with any fabric, but I normally just use a plain cotton or polyester - if you have lots of scraps, in any material, this is the perfect project to use them up.

This tutorial will tell you how to make a headband for an average adult's head. If you would like to make it bigger, then add more elastic; if you would like it smaller, use less elastic.. You can decide on the amount depending on how you would like it to fit. If you would like to adjust the size even more, then here is another post which includes a chart for head sizes: Thin Summer Crochet Headband (joyasitflies.co.uk).

You Will Need:

  • Two pieces of fabric 17" by 7"

  • One piece of fabric 11" by 3"

  • A piece of elastic 6" long

  • Iron

  • Safety Pin

  • General sewing equipment

How to Sew a Turban Headband:

  • Take one of the 17" by 7" pieces of fabric and fold it in half width ways, right sides together. Sew along the longest edge.

  • Repeat with the other 17" by 7" piece, and continue the same process with the 11" by 3" piece of fabric.

  • Turn them all right sides out and iron flat.

  • Thread the elastic through the smallest rectangle and sew both of the shortest ends closed to keep the elastic in place.

  • Place one of the large rectangles flat in front of you, vertically. Place the other in the middle of the first, horizontally.

  • Take the vertical rectangle and bring both its ends together around the horizontal piece. Do the same with the horizontal rectangle. Pull both rectangles away from each other and you should then have a turban effect.

  • Baste the shortest edges of each side of the turban together to secure them.

  • Take the elasticated fabric and place one of its short ends right sides together onto the middle of one of the short ends of the turban. Wrap each side of the turban fabric around the elastic and sew along the edge. Pull right sides out.

  • Repeat with the last side.

You now have a pretty turban headband to wear!
