Sew a Simple Wrist Pin Cushion

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

Anybody who sews knows that the most important thing to have is pins. But, you also need something to hold the pins with. A pin cushion is the thing for this and it is even better when it sits on your wrist.

Here is a really simple step-by-step guide on how to make a pin cushion. It uses up scrap material and very little else. By the way, I do use a glue gun in this process, but if you do not have one you could use fabric glue, or even hand sew it. The same thing goes for the Velcro on the strap. If you don't have any Velcro at hand you could substitute it by using other fastenings like snaps or a button.

Let's get started!

You Will Need:

  • 2 circles of fabric 4inches in diameter

  • 2 rectangles of fabric 4inches by 1.75inches

  • 1 circle of scrap felt approximately 2inches in diameter

  • Toy stuffing

  • A button

  • Embroidery thread and needle

  • Glue gun/ fabric glue

  • 1inch by 3/4inch of Velcro

  • Iron

  • General sewing equipment

Method:

  • Place the two circles right sides together. Sew around the edge until you come approximately 1" from where you started, then stop.

  • Fold 1/4" to the wrong side of the shortest edge of one rectangle and iron flat. Then fold lengthways right sides together. Sew along the longest edge.

  • Repeat with second rectangle.

  • Turn the circle and rectangles right side out and press them flat with an iron.

  • Stuff the circle with toy stuffing, make sure it is firm

  • Hand sew the opening closed with a ladder stitch.

  • Take your embroidery thread and push the needle through the middle of the cushion (the circle you stuffed will now be called a cushion).Bring the thread around the outside of the cushion and back through the middle.

  • Continue this process until you have as many loops around the cushion as you desire.

  • Sew a button on the top, in the middle.

  • Take your two straps (the rectangles) and glue the raw edges to the back of the cushion approximately 1/4" from the middle.

  • Glue the circle of felt to the back of the cushion so that it covers the glued part of the straps.

  • The last thing to do is to sew the Velcro onto the ends of the straps, you can adjust the length if you need to to suit your wrist.

There we go, now all that is left to do is to stick some pins in it and wear it!
