More Beginner Crochet Stitches

Updated: May 10, 2023

white, yellow, pink and purple balls of yarn, pink yarn being crocheted, multicoloured crochet hooks, pink background with grey text.

In my previous blog post I taught you the very basics of crocheting, from holding your yarn to making a treble crochet, if you haven't seen it, then check it out here: Beginner Crochet Stitches!

In this post, I am going to teach you the last two crochet stitches that every beginner should know. These are called a double treble crochet and a triple treble crochet - in the US, these stitches are known as a treble crochet and a double treble crochet. They are very easy to learn and look amazing too!

As you know, at the end of each row you have a turning chain which differs in number depending on the stitch you are making. I am going to put a quick table here, so that you will have a reference if you forget how many you need (something which I always use!).

Double Treble Crochet

  • Make a chain. Like a treble crochet, we are going to yarn over the hook. However, we are going to do it twice (so, wrap your yarn around your hook, and then wrap it again).

  • Now, insert it into the fourth chain from the hook.

  • Yarn over and pull through (you should have four loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through the first two loops (you should have three loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through two loops (you should have two loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through the last two loops.

  • Repeat this process in each chain.

  • When you get to the end, chain 4, and turn your work.

  • Remember, this chain 4 counts as your first stitch. So, yarn over your hook twice, and insert it into the second stitch. Work your stitch like you did in the first round, and continue down the row.

Triple Treble Crochet

  • Make a chain. Yarn over your hook three times. Now, insert your hook into the top of the fifth chain from the hook.

  • Yarn over and pull through (you should have five loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull though two loops (you should have four loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through two loops (three loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through two loops (two loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through the last two loops on your hook.

  • When you get to the end, chain 5, and turn your work.

  • Remember, this chain 5 counts as your first triple treble crochet. So, yarn over your hook three times, and insert it into the second stitch. Work your stitch like you did in the first round, and continue down the row.
