In this tutorial, you will learn how to sew two simple headbands. They are very quick to make, use up scrap fabric and, if you are a beginner, will introduce you to using stretch fabrics.
The first headband is just a plain flat design, and the second is a smaller type of turban. If you like this post and would like to learn how to make a different type of turban headband, see here.
The measurements I have used will make an average adult-sized headband (21.5"). But you can adjust the measurements to suit you.
Suggested fabrics: Jersey, knit, stretch cotton.
Here are just a few tips on using stretch fabrics:
If you are using a normal sewing machine (not an overlocker) always use a zigzag stitch, as straight stitches will rip.
Use a stretch sewing machine needle and not a universal needle.
Do not pull the fabric as you are sewing, leave it loose.
What You Will Need:
Headband No. 1
Fabric measuring: 22" x 5.5"
General sewing equipment
Headband No. 2
Fabric measuring 22.5" x 6"
General sewing equipment
Method:
Headband No. 1
Pin your fabric in half, width ways, and right sides together. Sew closed.
Adjust your fabric so that the seam is in the center.
Fold the front sides together.
Take your outside piece of fabric and pin it to the corresponding side.
Begin sewing your seam closed. Be careful not to sew the fabric inside as well.
Once you get near the end, pull the inside fabric out, creating more to sew.
Repeat this process until you reach approximately 2" from the end.
From the gap you have left, pull the fabric the right way out.
Iron the headband flat.
Hand sew the gap closed.
Headband No. 2
Pin your fabric, lengthways, and right sides together. Sew closed.
Turn right sides out.
Place the edges of your fabric as shown in the photo below.
Fold one side over the other.
Sew together and turn right sides out.
Iron flat to finish.
