How to Sew a Wrap Skirt - draft your own pattern

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create your own pattern and sew a gorgeous wrap skirt.

This project is perfect if you are a beginner wanting to learn how to sew your own clothes and create patterns in the future.

Drafting this pattern is simple as you will not need to draw and measure any confusing shapes because it is made up of rectangles! For fabric, you can use any dressmaking fabrics, e.g. cotton, polyester, or viscose.

There is also a YouTube tutorial to help:

What You Will Need

  • Approximately 3.5 meters of fabric (this may differ according to your size)

  • Light interfacing

  • Measuring equipment

  • Sewing machine/overlocker

  • General sewing equipment

Method

Measuring:

Main piece

  • Waist measurement doubled by your desired length (e.g. 26")

Waistband

  • Half your waist measurement times 3 by 3"

Ruffle

  • Approx. 70" (this may vary according to your skirt's width) by 5"

Ties

  • Approx. 20" by 1.5"

Add to all of these measurements a 0.25" seam allowance.

Cutting out the fabric:

Cut all of these pieces out of the measurements above.

  • Cut one of your main pieces.

  • Cut one of your waistband pieces out of fabric, and one out of interfacing.

  • Cut two of your tie pieces.

  • Cut one approximate measurement of your ruffle.

Sewing the main piece:

  • Before you start sewing, there is just a little detail in the fabric I like to add. Using something like a plate as a stencil on the two bottom corners, round them out to make them curved.

  • Along the top edge of the fabric, create a row of ruffles. Note: For help on how to sew ruffles, see my blog post here.

  • Pull your ruffles evenly so that you finish with the skirt the width of yyourou waist and a half.

Sewing the ruffle:

  • Fold a double hem of 0.25" along one edge of your ruffle fabric. Sew closed.

  • Along the top edge sew a row of ruffles.

  • This next step is mainly done by guesswork! Pull your ruffles so that they are approx. the length to go around the entire edge of your skirt.

  • Pin them right sides together along the edge of your skirt, and make any adjustments to the length that are necessary.

Tip: As the length of the ruffle is so long, you can finish it just at the bottom, on the side that, when wrapped, will be on the inside and not visible.

  • Once you have got the correct length, sew a double hem along the edge of the ruffle which you stopped at the bottom of the skirt.

  • Sew the ruffle and the skirt, right sides together.

  • Iron the ruffle out flat, with the inside fabric pointing towards the skirt.

  • Along the raw edge of the skirt which does not have a ruffle, iron a hem which will naturally be created due to the step above. Sew closed.

Sewing the Waistband:

  • Attach your interfacing to the wrong side of the waistband fabric.

  • Iron a 0.25" hem along one of the long edges and both short edges.

  • Place your waistband's unhemmed edge right sides together to the top edge of the skirt.

  • Sew closed.

  • Iron the waistband up and fold it in half, so that it covers the sewn edge.

  • Oversew the waistband closed.

Sewing the ties and finishing touches:

  • Fold one of your ties right sides together.

  • Sew closed.

  • Turn right sides out and iron flat.

  • Hem one of the raw edges.

  • Place your remaining raw edge inside one of the sides of the waistband.

  • Oversew closed.

  • Repeat with your other tie.

  • Wrap your skirt around your waist and mark where your ties need to pull through.

  • Measure the width of your tie and sew a buttonhole that length.

Note: For help on sewing buttonholes, check out my post here.

Give your skirt a final iron and you are all done!
