I don't know about you, but I love learning new crochet stitches. Once you have mastered the basic stitches (double, half treble, trebles etc.), it's great to broaden your knowledge and learn some more intricate stitches.
This twist stitch is absolutely gorgeous. It looks complicated but, in fact, it is relatively straightforward. Once you get the hang of making back-post and front-post treble crochets, you will have no problem!
So, what exactly can you use the crochet twist stitch for? Well, anything! I'm currently designing a tote bag which uses this stitch (stay tuned for that!) and it works so well! You could use this stitch to make coasters, washcloths, pillow covers, bags, or as ribbing for a garment. The choice is up to you!
Materials:
a yarn of your choice
a corresponding hook
scissors
Abbreviations:
tr: treble crochet
sl st: stip stitch
fptr: front post treble crochet (see below)
bptr: back post treble crochet (see below)
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in UK terms, not US (you can find my post explaining the difference between the two terms here).
The chain 3 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch.
Method:
Foundation Chain & Row 1:
Begin by making a slip knot. Then, chain your desired length, ensuring your chain is an even number.
Now, chain an extra 3.
Starting in the 4th chain from your hook, make 1 tr in each stitch down.
At the end, chain 3 and turn your work.
Row 2:
Remember, the chain 3 counts as your first stitch. In the next stitch, we are going to make 1 back post treble crochet (bptr). To do this:
Yarn over.
Twist your work and find the treble crochet from the previous row. FOr this stitch, we work around the treble crochet. Insert your hook from the back and push it around the treble crochet (see photos for help).
Yarn over and pull through (3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook).
Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.
That it your first back post treble crochet.
In the next stitch, make 1 treble crochet.
In the next stitch, make 1 back post treble crochet.
Continue down the row, alternating between back post trebles and normal trebles. At the end, make your last treble into the top of the beginning chain 3.
Chain 3 and turn your work.
Row 3:
You will see that the back post treble crochets from row 2 stick out. For row 3, we will be making front post treble crochets (fptr). To do this:
Yarn over.
Working into the next stitch, inert your hook at the front through the treble from the previous row (see photos for help).
Yarn over and make your treble as normal.
Make 1 treble in the next stitch.
Make 1 front post treble in the next.
Continue down the row, alternating between front post trebles and normal trebles.
At the end, make your treble into the top of the beginning chain 3.
Chain 3 and turn your work.
Continue to alternate between rows 2 and 3. You will see that these back post treble and front post trebles line up, creating rows of ridges, or twists. You will be able to see very quickly if you have gone wrong!
And there you are! Once you get the hang of making back and front post trebles, this stitch is very simple and so pretty!
