Summer is finally here! And that means that one needs some gorgeous accessories. That is why, this month, I thought I would take one of my old patterns (crochet sunburst granny squares) and turn it into this cute little clutch. Now, you really can use this bag for anything - as a tablet case, as a book cover or even as a travelling makeup bag!
To make this clutch, we are going to need 9 granny squares. If you are a beginner, check out my post for these simple granny squares here. Now, lets get started!
Materials:
a DK yarn of your choice (enough for nine granny squares and the outer border).
a 5mm crochet hook.
some stitch markers (I use about 6 or).
a button
a darning needle
scissors
Stitch Abbreviations:
dc: double crochet
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in UK terms, not US (you can find my post explaining the difference between the two terms here).

Method:
Step 1:
Begin by crocheting 9 granny squares. I have used these crochet sunburst granny squares (you can find my pattern for them here). You can, of course, use any type of granny square. You want them to measure roughly 4.5 inches across.
Joining your Granny Squares:
Lay your granny squares out to create a square, 3 squares by 3 squares.
Using your stitch markers, tack each join - this is simply to hold everything in place!
Attach your yarn and, in the back loop, slip stitch into each stitch along each line of squares. You will crochet down four lines in total.
Sew in any ends. You should now have a large square.
Creating the clutch bag:
Turn your square so that the back is facing you. Now, turn it so that it is the shape of a diamond.
Turn the bottom and two side corners in so that they meet. Tack where they all meet with your stitch markers.
Attach your yarn at the bottom left corner. Working into both pieces, slip stitch along in the back loop until you reach the middle join.
Now, working along the edge of the flap, make 1 dc in each stitch.
When you get to the top corner, make: 1 dc, chain 5, 1 dc back into the same space. This will create a small loop for your button.
Continue to work 1 dc into each stitch down the other side until you reach the centre join.
When you get to the centre join, work into both pieces and make 1 slip stitch along in the back loop of each stitch (just as you did on the other side).
At the end, fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends.
Finally, sew your button to the bottom of your bag.
And there you are! You now have your own crochet clutch bag!
