I think that the best gifts are homemade gifts. I love receiving something homemade as I know just how much time, thought, and effort goes into it. That is why these super simple crochet nesting baskets are the best. They are quick to make, beginner-friendly, and just gorgeous! And I know that if you do make these as a present, the receiver will be absolutely thrilled!
Materials:
Hook size: 6mm
Yarn: Any chunky yarn (find my favourite here).
Scissors
Darning Needle
Note: As with the majority of patterns, the size of your basket will vary depending on your tension, wool size, and hook size.
Terminology Abbreviations:
ch: chain
tr: Treble crochet
st/sts: Stitch/stitches
sl st: Slip stitch
htc: Half treble crochet
BLO: Back loop only
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in UK terms.
The chain 3 and chain 2 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch.
This pattern is worked by crocheting on either side of the foundation chain. You do not turn your work at the end of each round.
Method:
Creating the base:
Round 1:
Ch 13.
Work 6tr into 3rd ch from the hook.
Work 1tr into the next 10sts.
In last st, make 6tr.
Working along the other side of the foundation ch, make 1tr into the next 10sts.
Join with a sl st to the top of beginning ch 3.
Round 2:
Ch 3.
Make 1tr in same st, *2tr in next st*. Repeat from * 5 times. 1tr in next 10sts. *2tr in next st*. Repeat from * 5 times. 1tr in last 10sts. Join with a sl st to the top of beginning ch-3.
Round 3:
Ch 3..
Make 1tr in same st, 1tr in next st. *2tr in next st, 1tr in next st*. Repeat from * 5 times.
Make 1tr in next 10sts. *2tr in next st, 1tr in next st*. Repeat from * 5 times.
Make 1tr in last 10sts.
Join with a sl st to top of beginning ch 3.
Round 4:
Ch 3.
Make 1tr in same st, 1tr in next 2sts. *2tr in next st, 1tr in next 2sts*. Repeat from * 5 times.
Make 1tr in next 10sts. *2tr in next st, 1tr in next 2sts*. Repeat from * 5 times.
Make 1tr in last 10 sts.
Join with a sl st to the top of beginning ch 3.
Making the Sides:
Round 5:
Ch 2.
Make 1htc in the BLO of each st around.
Join with a sl st to the top of beginning ch 2.
Round 6-19: (Note: you can crochet as many rows as you would like for the sides. I find that 16 is the perfect amount.)
Ch 2.
Make 1htc into each st around.
Join with a sl st to the top of beginning ch 2.
Fasten off and sew in all ends. Fold over the top to complete.
