In honour of Valentine's day, which is just around the corner, I decided to make something to fit the occasion. These crochet love heart granny squares wouldn't technically be classed as a gift, but they most certainly could be used to make one! Maybe a purse or a bag? Or they could even be used as coasters to fit the occasion!
If, like me, you love crocheting granny squares, you'll love my patterns for the Sunburst Granny Square. Or, if you've never crocheted a granny square before, check out my pattern here.
Materials:
A yarn of your choice (I'm using Paintbox cotton)
a crochet hook (I'm using a 3.5mm)
scissors
darning needle
Stitch Abbreviations:
dc: double crochet
htr: half treble crochet
tr: treble crochet
dtr: double treble crochet
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in UK terms (you can find my post explaining the difference between UK and US terms here).
The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
Method:
Round 1:
Begin by making a magic ring (if you are unsure how to do this, check out my post here).
Chain 1.
Into the ring, make 10htr.
Slip stitch into the top of the first stitch to close the round.
Round 2:
Chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
Make 2htr in each stitch around (20htr in total).
Slip stitch into the top of the first stitch to close the round.
Round 3:
Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch).
In the next 9 stitches, make the following: 1htr, 1tr, 4dtr, 1dtr, 2tr, 1tr, 2htr, 1htr, 1dc.
Make 2htr in the next stitch.
Chain 1.
Make 2htr in the next stitch. This is the bottom point of your heart.
Working up the other side, make the following in the next 9 stitches: 1dc, 1htr, 2htr, 1tr, 2tr, 1dtr, 4dtr, 1tr, 1htr.
Slip stitch into the chain 1 from the beginning. Fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends.
Creating the square:
Note: There are two ways that you can crochet around the heart. 1: you can work into the back loop only of each stitch. Or 2) you can work into the "third loop" of each stitch. This can be found by turning your heart forward, and finding the loop behind the two loops that you would normally work into.
Round 1:
Side 1:
Attach your yarn in the chain one space at the bottom of your heart. Chain 1.
Working along the edge, make : 1htr, 1tr, 1tr, 1tr, 1dtr.
In the next stitch make: 1dtr, chain 2, 1dtr. This is the first corner of your square.
Side 2:
In the next 5 stitches make: 1dtr, 1tr, 1htr, 1htr, 1tr.
In the next stitch make: 1tr, chain 2, 1tr. This is the second corner.
Side 3:
In the next 9 stitches, make: 1tr, 1tr, 1tr, 1tr, 1dtr, 1tr, 1tr, 1tr, 1tr. (the dtr in made in the top centre stitch).
In the next stitch, make: 1tr, chain 2, 1tr. This is the third corner.
Side 4:
In the next 5 stitches, make: 1tr, 1htr, 1htr, 1tr, 1dtr.
In the next stitch, make: 1dtr, chain 2, 1dtr. This is the fourth corner.
End of round 1:
In the last 5 stitches, make: 1dtr, 1tr, 1tr, 1tr, 1htr.
Slip stitch into the first stitch to close the round.
Round 2-3:
Chain 3 (this does count as a stitch).
Make 1tr in each stitch along. At each corner space, make: 2tr, chain 3, 2tr.
At the end, slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3.
You can continue to make as many rounds as you like. When you have finished, fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends.
