Crochet Lily of the Valley Flower Bookmark

Updated: Mar 9

Crochet flower bookmark on an open book titled "A Ploughman". Purple flowers and a gray candle holder in the blurred background.

I think this is my favourite crochet pattern that I have designed. I absolutely adore this crochet flower bookmark, and I hope you will too!

Whether you are a book lover yourself or know someone who is, this Lily of the Valley bookmark is the perfect bookish gift. Not only is it super handy (when is a bookmark not?!) but it also looks gorgous!

So, without further ado, let's get into the pattern!

Check out the video tutorial here!

Materials:

  • a lightweight yarn of your choice in white and green (I'm using Paintbox cotton).

  • a 2.5mm crochet hook.

  • scissors.

  • darning needle.

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • dc: double crochet

  • htr: half treble crochet

  • tr: treble crochet

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in UK terms (you can find my post explaining the difference between UK and US terms here).

  • For the flower, we will be working in rounds. Do not turn your work.

  • The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

Method:

The Flower:

Round 1:

  • Begin by making a magic ring (if you are unsure how to do this, check out my post here).

  • Chain 1.

  • Into the ring, make 7dc.

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 2:

  • Chain 1.

  • Make 2dc (aka, an increase) into each stitch around (14dc in total).

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 3-5:

  • Chain 1.

  • Make 1dc into each stitch around (14dc in total).

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 6:

  • Chain 1.

  • *Make 1dc, then 1 decrease.* Repeat around until you have 2 stitches left.

  • Make 1dc into these last two stitches. (10dc in total)

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 7:

  • Chain 1.

  • In the same stitch, make: 1dc, 1htr, 1tr.

  • In the next stitch, make: 1tr, 1htr, 1dc.

  • Repeat the last two steps around. You will make 5 petals in total.

  • At the end, fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends.

For the Vine:

Leaf 1:

  • Chain 6.

  • Slip stitch back into the first chain.

Leaves 2-5:

  • Chain 18.

  • Slip stitch into the 6th chain from your hook.

Creating the stem:

  • When you have completed all 5 leaves, chain 16.

  • We are now going to make a larger leaf. Starting in the 2nd chain from your hook, make: 1 slip stitch, 1dc, 1htr, and 1 slip stitch.

  • Chain 7.

  • Fasten off and cut your yarn, leaving a long tail end (we will use this to sew with later).

Optional Step:

  • With your green yarn, chain 5.

  • Starting in the 2nd chain from your hook, make: 1 slip stitch, 1dc, 1htr, and 1 slip stitch.

  • Fasten off and cut your yarn, leaving a long tail end (for sewing with).

Assembling:

  • Take the long tail end of your vine and, using your darning needle, sew it to the top of your flower.

  • Then, take your other leaf and sew it onto the vine just above the flower.

  • Sew in any loose ends.
