Valentine's Day is a wonderful occasion to express love and affection...so, why not create a beautiful decoration that befits the occasion?

This crochet heart garland is a unique (but surprisingly simple!) decoration that will add that perfect little touch of romance to your home. You could even give it as a gift! What shows you care quite like a handmade gift? So, whether you are an experienced crocheter or reasonably new to this wonderful craft, this free crochet pattern is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all skill levels.

Let's get into the pattern!

Materials

Of course, to make these hearts, you'll need some yarn. For the main heart, I used the Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky in Vintage Pink. You want to use a weight (4) medium/chunky yarn of your choice. For one garland, I tried using the James C. Brett Flutterby chunky yarn, and I absolutely adored how this turned out!

What You'll Need:
  • Some chunky yarn (in a colour of your choice), and some DK (in white or cream). See above for some more details about the yarn I use.

  • A 5mm and 3.5mm crochet hook

  • A darning needle

  • Scissors

  • Iron and ironing board

  • A tea towel

Stitch Abbreviations:
  • tr: treble crochet (US double crochet)

  • dtr: double treble crochet (US treble crochet)

  • sl st: slip stitch

Pattern Notes:
  • This pattern is worked in UK crochet terms, not US. If you are unsure about the difference between these two, check out my blog post here, where I discuss it in detail.

Method:

Creating the First Heart:

  1. With your coloured yarn and 5mm hook, make a slip knot and chain 5.

  2. Sl st into the first chain. This will create a small circle.

  1. Chain 3. Working into the circle, make 3dtr.

  2. Chain 1.

  3. Working into the circle, make 3tr.

  4. Chain 2, and sl st back into the first chain. This creates the point of your heart.

  1. Working into the circle, make 3tr.

  2. Chain 1.

  3. Working into the circle, make 3dtr.

  4. Chain 3 and sl st into the circle. Fasten off and cut your yarn. If your circle has loosened too much, you can make it tighter by pulling the loose tail ends.

This is the first heart. From now on, each heart that we crochet is going to be joined to the previous heart from the side. With this method, you can make your garland as long or as short as you want.

Creating and Joining Your Other Hearts:

  1. With your coloured yarn and 5mm hook, make a slip knot and chain 5.

  2. Sl st back into the first chain to create a small ring.

  1. Chain 3.

  2. Working into the ring, make 3dtr.

  3. Now, take your other heart, and find the chain one space on the right side. Insert your hook from the front into this chain 1 space. Make a sl st. Now chain 1.

  4. Working in the ring, make 3tr.

  5. Chain 2, then sl st into the first chain to create the point of your heart.

  1. Working into the ring, make 3tr.

  2. Chain 1.

  3. Working into the ring, make 3dtr.

  4. Chain 3, then sl st into the ring. Fasten off and cut your yarn.

Continue the above steps, joining each new heart to the chain 1 space on the right side of the previous heart. Your garland should look similar to this:

Now, we are going to iron our garland flat. Lay your garland on your ironing board, cover it with your tea towel (this will stop your yarn from burning), and iron each heart flat.

Tip: Start with quite a low setting on your iron and you can then increase the temperature if you need to. If you start with your iron too hot, you risk burning your yarn!

Creating the White Heart Stitches:
  1. Taking your white yarn and 3.5mm crochet hook, make a slip knot.

  2. Now, make a long chain. You want this to be the length of your garland, plus at least 3 inches.

  3. Now, using your crochet hook to help you, weave this chain in and out of each heart, so that your chain shows through each chain one space between each heart. See below.

Leave enough of the chain hanging from each end. You can use each of these ends to hang your garland up!
