Everybody enjoys a good book. And most of the time you cannot bear to put it down. But, the problem that every bookworm finds, is that you do not want to damage your book! So this book sleeve is the perfect thing (they also make great presents for your bookish friend).
I have already made a pattern for a book cover - which is just like a bag - but I prefer a book sleeve as it is constantly on the book so that you do not forget to put the book back in it after reading.
For extra help there is a video at the end of the page!
Measuring Your Book:
Main fabric: For the width, measure your book across the front, spine and back. For the length, measure the height of your book.
Inside flap fabric: This will be the length of your book x 3" (this measurement is adjustable, but 3" is a general size).
Pocket fabric: This is the width of the front of your book x 4" (once again this measurement can be adjusted).
If you you are making this as a present, or do not have a particular book you would like to make it for, the standard book sizes are as follows:
-Hardcover books: 6"x 9"
-Paperbacks: 5" x 8"/6" x 9"
If you are using these measurements, than you will have to double the width and add 1" (e.g.: 6" x 9" will become 13" x 9")
To all the measurements you take, you will need to add on 1/2" for seam allowance.
What you will need:
For all book measurements, see here.
Main fabric x 2
Inside flap fabric x 4
Pocket fabric x 2
Ribbon approximately 20" long
Iron
General sewing equipment
Method:
Place both your pocket pieces right sides together and sew along the top side.
Turn right sides out, iron flat and oversew across the top edge.
Place 2 of your inside flap pieces right sides together and sew along one of the longest edges.
Turn right side out, iron flat and Oversew.
Repeat with your remaining inside flap pieces.
Place your pocket on the bottom right hand corner of your main fabric, right side up.
Sew down the middle of the fabric to create two pockets.
Place your ribbon on top of the raw edge of the pocket. Only secure the bottom of the ribbon.
Place your inside flaps on either side of the main fabric, outside sides together.
Place your other main fabric on top, right sides together.
Sew around the fabric, leaving a gap at the top.
Turn right sides out and iron flat.
Oversew the top edge to close the hole.
Pin the rest of the ribbon down the centre of your book sleeve (leave the excess as this will create a book mark).
Over sew two parallel lines down the ribbon.
Give your book sleeve a final iron and then place your book in it!
